What is assisted living?

Older adults often thrive in assisted living. It’s a social model of care where

residents have fun together.

For Windhaven resident Royal Jolley, it’s like the bar on the famous TV sitcom,

“Cheers,” because everybody knows his name. He forged friendships with his

new neighbors and caregivers almost immediately upon moving in. Royal says it’s

a great place to be when you need a little help to maintain your independence.

Residents receive personalized care to match their needs. That can be medication

management, mobility assistance, or much more, including help with bathing and

grooming.

Employees take care of housekeeping, laundry and cooking, too, so residents

have more time to focus on other interests. They can start the day at an exercise

class, stop by the beauty salon for a haircut, play card games or hit the putting

range, create art, plant and tend flowers, and even ride the WHC bus for a weekly

shopping trip or visit to a local attraction.

All of it is designed for the best possible well-being in several areas: physical,

social, emotional, intellectual and spiritual. Chaplains provide worship services,

Bible studies, hymn sings and one-on-one counsel.

Janet Williamson has enjoyed life at Windhaven both before and after her

husband died. Janet likes to stay busy, but she also likes alone time in her

apartment, too, and says the friendly, attentive staff offer plenty of privacy to

residents.

Janet offers this advice: Don’t wait; move sooner rather than later.

Start that process with a tour. Western Home Communities offers three assisted

living communities in Cedar Falls. Find out which one is right for you, meet the
