It’s the little things

by Chaplain Byron Simar

We've heard it said, "It's the little things that matter.” It goes against what we’re tempted to believe, that’s it the big things that really matter in life.

The longer I live and the more time I spend at WHC, I'm convinced that it's the little things that count the most.

Life is filled with opportunities to do the little things.

Here are some examples of "little things" I've experienced around Western Home Communities:

  • Helping someone loosen the cap on their water bottle.

  • Securely putting the cover on the cup of coffee.

  • Pulling suspenders up over someone's shoulders.

  • Tying shoe laces to prevent a fall.

  • Giving a magnifying glass to someone so they can read the print or thermostat.

  • Asking a resident what her hoodie says and she replies confidently, "God is good all the time!"

  • Opening a communion cup or pointing to the words of the song or scripture.

  • A handshake or a smile that goes a mile.

Speaking of a smile, did you know that Target store employees are now required to smile if they are within 10 feet of a shopper?  They also must make eye contact with and wave to or greet the customer.

Jesus said,

If you give even a cup of cold water to one of the least of my followers, you will surely be rewarded.
— Matthew 10:42 NLT

Even if you’re just giving water to somebody thirsty, the Bible calls that ministry. This emphasizes the importance of small acts of kindness, hospitality and serving others in need.

Could the "little things" be the cup of cold water of which Jesus spoke?

The greatest things are actually the smallest things. It's the little things that God  notices.  It's possible that nobody's ever going to know about it.  But God says, "I saw that."

The Christmas season is when we celebrate the birth of a baby.   Babies are little packages, but they are a big deal. The birth of Jesus was a big deal! An angelic choir announced the birth of the Savior of the world. It wasn't mere chance that caused the angel one night long ago to say to a virgin maiden, "His name shall be called Jesus."

It's the little things like the baby Jesus that makes everything matter.

The spiritual care team wishes each one a blessed Merry Christmas!
